China passes major data protection law

The People’s Republic of China (PRC) passed the Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) on Friday the 20th of August 2021. 

The new privacy regime strengthens the protection around the use and collection of personal data and introduces a new requirement for user consent. This comprehensive data privacy law goes into effect on November 1, 2021.

Whatsapp has been fined a record 225 million euros (or $267 million) by the Irish data privacy regulator for privacy breaches

Ireland's Data Privacy Commissioner (DPC), the lead data privacy regulator for Facebook within the European Union, had been investigating complaints about how WhatsApp processes user data under Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

ICO seeks consultation on how organizations can continue to protect people’s personal data when it’s transferred outside of the UK

The U.K. Information Commissioner's Office is launching a consultation on protecting personal data in cross-border transfers. The ICO is developing international data transfer agreement (IDTA) and guidance, that replaces Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs). 

ICO will require the companies to use the IDTA to transfer the data outside of UK. Brexit required the U.K. to develop its own rules under the U.K.'s data protection law. The ICO is currently seeking responses on the draft rules. The consultation closes on October 7 to submit feedback.

UAE announced Data Privacy Law as part of “Projects of the 50” initiatives

The UAE announced the first set of 50 new projects and initiatives set to be unveiled this month as part of its golden jubilee.

As part of this initiative, the UAE is also set to unveil a new data law that will ensure the privacy of individuals and international companies. In the coming weeks, the country will deploy and decree the UAE Data Law — the first federal law of its kind that will be drafted in partnership with major technology companies.
