UK FCA fines Equifax following 2017 data breach

The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority issued an 11 million GBP fine to consumer credit rating agency Equifax for its role in a large-scale 2017 data breach. For six weeks in 2017, hackers accessed the personal information of 13.8 million U.K. citizens, which was stored on U.S. servers, in addition to the nearly 148 million U.S. citizens who were impacted by the breach.

Software company reaches $49.5M settlement with US attorneys general over data breach

Software company Blackbaud announced it reached a USD49.5 million settlement with 49 U.S. states and the District of Columbia over a 2020 data breach that exposed millions of consumers' personal data. Blackbaud said it agreed to comply with applicable laws, not to make misleading statements related to its data protection, privacy, security, confidentiality, integrity, breach notification requirements, and similar matters, and to implement and improve certain cybersecurity programs and tools.

1M users' genetic data posted to the dark web

Genetic data belonging to approximately 1 million users of genetic testing service 23andMe surfaced on the dark web. The data included first and last names, gender, and individual ancestry evaluation details. The information posted specifically targeted individuals with Ashkenazi Jewish ancestry. A 23andMe spokesperson did not classify the incident as a hack, claiming purchased or leaked user credentials allowed improper access to the database.

Meta proposed charging EU users for ad-free services to address alleged EU General Data Protection Regulation violations concerning personalized advertising.
