Overview of Migration Risks

What is Migration Risks and Advantages? There are lots of risks involved during the migration of files and data. Data Migration helps the performance and productivity of an organization. The migration of data also helps eliminate wasteful data and improves the security of valuable data. Major risks that can occur during Data Migration are not planning properly which can lead to underestimation of the project leading to redoing the process again. Migration should involve maintenance and management. The poor Data Migration process can lead to data cleansing.

Models Of Migration Risks

Here are various service models available:

In software as a service (SaaS)

  • In SaaS, the cloud service provider is responsible for nearly all security.
  • In SaaS, the user can access and use the cloud application but it cannot make any changes to the application. The SaaS provider is responsible for physical and perimeter security, for logging, monitoring and auditing, and application security.
  • The user is responsible for access authorization and entitlements.
  • SaaS takes care of CRM, Business Management, Security, and Tools.

In Platform as a Service (PaaS)

  • The cloud provider is responsible for the security of the platform, while the consumer is responsible for everything they implement on the platform, including how they configure any offered security features.
  • The responsibilities are more evenly shared.
  • PaaS takes care of application platform, database, development, and integration

In Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)

  • The provider is responsible for foundational security, while the cloud user is responsible for everything that they build on the infrastructure.
  • The IaaS provider monitors the perimeter for attacks, but the consumer is fully responsible for how they define and implement their virtual network security.
  • This places far more responsibility on the user.
  • IaaS takes care of storage, virtualization, CDN, Networking, Computer.

What are various migration Risks?

  • Risk register created. What is the likelihood of failure? What is the impact?
  • GRC. IT Governance. IT Risk-Management. IT Compliance.
  • Not thought through everything. Planning.
  • Data-centre to cloud risks are different from all these risks.
  • Sizing errors. Latency errors. Capacity errors.
  • The hardware is AWS. Sources are SAP. Data is your problem.
  • ALL applications, legacy, tier-2, tier-3 supply may not be in the Inventory.
  • If SAP … what about all the non-SAP migration?
  • What about a one-off, once-a-year, or once in a blue moon application?
  • Inadequate skill-sets to do the job.
  • Taking on too much. Adding, changing. Not one step at a time – learning. Each installation, the instance may be unique.
  • Contingency planning not put in place.
  • BCP and DR must support the INTERIM stage.
  • The business process must be updated.

How Riskpro can help?

Riskpro methodology

  • We start and maintain a Risk Register. List of all risks from EACH and ALL stakeholders.
  • We assign a 5-point scale on ‘Likelihood’ and ‘Impact’ to each and every risk.
  • This will LIST and prioritize focus areas.
  • You still have to mitigate MOST risks before you even start.
  • This can have a PRE, IN, and POST phases to your “Project migration” constantly assess, mitigate, and manage the risks.

Riskpro Risk Mitigation strategy

  • Risk Retention
  • Risk Avoidance/Elimination
  • Risk Transfer
  • Risk Reduction
