ISO 31000 - Comprehensive Risk Management Advisory

Every organization has objectives to achieve, and in order to achieve them, any uncertainty that could interfere with their realization must be effectively managed. As greater awareness is created about ISO 31000, more and more companies are turning towards this all encompassing risk management framework that is easy to understand, yet very powerful and complete.

ISO 31000 is clearly different from existing guidelines in that the emphasis is shifted from something happening – the event – to the effect on objectives. It sets out principles, a framework, and a process for the management of all forms of risk, including safety and environment, in all organizations, regardless of size. Key principles include Communication and Consultation, establishing the context, Risk assessment steps- Identification, Analysis, Evaluation, Risk treatment, Monitoring and review.

Riskpro's ISO 31000 Training and Advisory

Riskpro has conducted ISO 31000 (Risk Management) trainings and complete implementation in various organisations. Our ISO 31000 trainings are usually 1-2 days workshops that cover the full framework in a practical and easy to understand approach. At the end of ISO 31000 trainings, experienced participants can actually effortlessly implement the framework at your organisations.

Riskpro addresses most ISO 31000 implementations in phases depending upon the Risk Management maturity of our clients. Our experience indicates that most organisations in India fall short of a well defined and mature risk management framework and these organisations can greatly benefit even if they implement foundational aspects of ISO 31000.

ISO 31000 Certification

ISO 31000 is a Guideline not a Standard (despite the ISO prefix). It is a guidance document, not for certification, but now that it is being rapidly adopted nationally and internationally as the standard for risk management. Really, certification of effective risk management is meaningless.

Currently, ISO 31000 is not intended for purpose of certification. Accordingly, our response to a certification is that it is a standard that can help streamline risk management efforts. Australia and New Zealand have been against certification for ISO 31000 since its pre-conception. So have many individual risk management practitioners and some national risk management associations in Europe. Another key roadblock to effective certification is the competence of the certification body.

We find that even with the better consulting and certification bodies, knowledge of what constitutes effective risk management is poor. Despite the need for certification, ISO 31000 and ISO Guide 73 make is the development of a common platform for understanding and communications a lot easier.
